Trip 3 Day 10 (November 2): Valley of Muses, Leuktra, Plataia, Thebes

Our last day of Trip 3 began at the Valley of the Muses where Sarah gave her report on the site and Hesiod who claimed to have been inspired there by the muses to write poetry. I left my batteries on the bus, unfortunately, and my camera died before I could take a picture. Thankfully, Andrew got a good one.

Next we stopped at the site of the battle of Leuktra (371 BCE) where a monument commemorating the battle and reconstructed by modern archaeologists now stands.

We then made a quick stop at Eutresis. There's not much visible there now but it's a really important site for Bronze Age studies. Then we were off to Plataia where Ben gave his report on the site and the battle which occurred there in 479 BCE.

In ancient times, Boeotia was known as a farming area so when I saw this guy on his tractor outside the Thebes museum with the Boeotia license plate, I had to take a picture.

The Thebes museum has been closed for something like 15 years and isn't yet ready to be opened but we were able to go inside led by the experts working on the exhibits. Of course, we weren't able to take any pictures but it was really, really cool! I think my favorite part was the room where they're piecing together a wall which still has paint on it.

After the museum, we had our walking tour of Thebes.

Our final destination in our tour was the temple of Apollo Ismenias where Nic gave his report on Pindar which included a reading of Pythian 11.
