Crete Day 2, Feb 14: Chania Museum, Aptera, Rethymnon Museum, Arkadi Monastery

Because the Chania museum was closed when we tried to visit the day before, we started the morning there. It's housed in a building that still has architectural elements from the Ottoman occupation.

There were several of these terra cotta ladies with their hands on their heads. I wonder what they were getting arrested for? ;)

After the museum, we visited the site of Aptera where Angele gave her report. There was a gorgeous view of the mountains,

a field filled with column bits,

the remains of a theater,

and some Byzantine buildings and Roman baths.

At the Rethymnon museum no pictures were allowed. After lunch, we went to the Arkadi monastery where Andrew gave his report on Ottoman Crete. Almost a thousand Cretans sought refuge in the monastery during one of the Cretan revolts against Ottoman rule. The Cretans decided to blow themselves up instead of surrendering to the Ottomans.
