Crete Day 6, Feb 18: Gournia, Panagia Kera, Irakleion

Sarah gave the first report of the day at the site of Gournia where she talked about Harriet Boyd Hawes, famous lady archaeologist who dug here in the early 1900s.

Our next stop was at Kritsa to see the Panagia Kera church where Ben gave his report.

On the drive to the next stop, Mike gave his report on Sir Arthur Evans, the (in)famous archaelogist who discovered the Minoan palace at Knossos and Simon gave his report on Cretan writing systems.

Back in Irakleion, we climbed up to the monument honoring Greek author Nikos Kazantazakis, on whom Nikos gave his report. You might be familiar with some of Kazantzakis' most famous works because of the movies that were made based on them--Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ.

"I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free."

Before descending back into the city, David gave his report on Venetian Crete.

While we waited for time to get back on the Ferry to head home, we wandered around Irakleion seeing a whole lot of costumed kids and adults celebrating Carnivale. I wish I'd gotten a picture of the whole family dressed as alarm clocks.

A few of us wandered out to the water and looked around the Venetian fortress.
