Trip 2 Day 10 (October 15): Sparta

Mistras was closed because of guard strikes so we started the day at the statue of Leonidas where we were joined by Professor Guy Sanders, leader of our walking tour through ancient Sparta.

We saw a round building, probably from the middle 7th century BCE, which no one can adequately explain.

the scant remains of the temple of Athena Chalioikos,

a Roman theater,

and blocks featuring the cursus annorum (list of public officials by year).

We also walked up a big hill to see the Menelaion and the Helenaion.

Next we visited the Spartan museum which mostly had really old objects or Roman ones, since the Spartans weren't known for their artistic endeavors during the Classical period.

Last we visited the temple of Artemis Orthyia (pictured below) and the Eurotas altar (which I didn't seem to get any pictures of).
