Trip 3 Day 9 (November 1): Chaironeia, Chaironeia Museum, Orchomenos, Kabirion, Onchestos, Haliartos

At Chaironeia, we saw the lion statue commemorating those Thebans who died in the battle of 338 BCE. It's very like the one we saw on Trip I in Amphipolis.

Then, for her report, Rachel led us through a reenactment of that battle and the later battle fought by Sulla in 86 BCE. It was a pretty cool way to go over the details of the battles. After Sulla again defeated Mithridates, we headed over to the Chaironeia museum.

We next had a look at a stone theater whose seats were built right into the bedrock.

Then we moved on to the Treasury of Minyas at Orchomenos where Kyle gave his report.

We also had a look at the nearby theater.

Also in Orchomenos, we visited the Church of the Panagia of the Skripou, built in 873. As the story goes, the Nazis came here in WWII but were stopped by a vision of the Virgin Mary. The church and the village remained untouched during the war and every year afterward, the Nazi officer who had been in charge that day returned to the church.

Within the church walls are reused blocks from nearby Hellenistic buildings.

After lunch we found ourselves at an overgrown site where the famous Kabirion cups were found. Seated in the stone theater seats, we heard Jess's report on the cups and the site.

The next site, Onchestos, once home to a temple of Apollo, was also overgrown.

Our last stop of the day was at the Haliartos Tower built by the Franks.
